Jordan first discovered Monakis when she visited Rossi Bar in Brighton on February 8, 2020. It was the first of a handful of band performances she witnessed. Here is the review of this concert…..

MONAKIS – LE BAR ROSSI, BRIGHTON 08.02.20

It was about time I finally opened my gig account at Rossi Bar located at 8 Queens Road, Brighton. It’s a compact establishment and quite easy to miss, but it’s located a few doors down from The Hope & Ruin towards the clock tower.

A trio of local guys who call each other Monakis were on the agenda. The guys were James Porter (bass/vocals), Aaron Butler (guitar/vocals) and Joe Mctaggart (drums). They rushed on stage and then BANG! They hit us with their first single ‘Animosity’. Holy shit, they’re awesome! From the beginning, we were treated to the meeting of traditional punk rock and IDLES. The vocals were served with a Cockney (Rejects) twang during their very enjoyable seven-song set.

Vocal duties were shared between the guys and this brash, fun young band played with a lot of bravado and yet, just like tonight’s headliners, this was only their fourth gig. It’s exactly the sound people are looking for right now – a modern take on punk.

By following the above steps IDLES and Fontaines DC, Thumper, Ditz, BlackWaters and Wife Swap USA. Myself and fellow scholar Jordan Mooney instantly fell in love with these guys! Praise indeed! We need to see them live as soon as possible. They’re working to host a local appearance on March 1, so keep an eye on the link below for details. It was definitely worth going out tonight just to see Monakis. This group is unmissable! There are no two ways to do it!
