Originally starting life as a duo in 2018 named Canondrome, after the original drummer moved to Melbourne last year, singer-guitarist Lorcan Coates recruited two new members and moved on. with the band under the moniker Planisphere.
The Brisbane band had a busy 2021 with a series of local live shows refining their sound as work progressed on their debut EP of original material.
Last week, Planisphere released ‘Fame Or Tragedy’ (recorded and mixed by Brock Weston of Bugs) featuring five tracks of futuristic beats married to heavy riffs pulled straight from the 70s and 80s alongside epic, catastrophic beats and sounds experimental electronics. escapes.
Influences from Death From Above, Royal Blood and DZ Deathrays are evident on singles “Fury” and “Underneath”.
Then there are moments of introspective angular rock reminiscent of a Washed Out-The Strokes (“Red Eye”) hybrid before the EP ends with the intense, brooding punk rock and sludge metal of “I’m Not Trying To Be Mean».
Ahead of a kick-off show (location, date TBC) next month, Lorcan sat down to discuss the band, potentially getting his cat tattoo, the best place for a midnight meal and the timeless ethical dilemma of taking out the trash / leaving it for the next person – you know the big stuff!
Who is Planisphere… The band originally started as Canondrome as two musicians, looking for that rawer, fuzzier garage rock sound. So unfortunately Sam [drummer] had to move to Melbourne, and with the addition of Jai [synth] and Kane [drums] we are where we are going today for that electronically influenced heavy rock.
It looks like… If Royal Blood, DZ Deathrays, Jack White and Death From Above were to write a soundtrack for ‘Stranger Things’.
Our first gig was… We were lucky enough to play our first gig as Planisphere at the Zoo supporting friends The Buzzing Towers for their unique “Canopy” launch.
When did you choose the name of the band, and was it a unanimous decision… Coming up with the new name was an interesting process. We would draw a big grid on sheets of paper, write the coolest space-related words we could find in each box, cut out the page, and shuffle all the words around the table to try and come up with ideas.
I think the best that came out of this process was “10 Billion Molten Martians”, but in the end we ended up borrowing the name from a 17.5 minute masterpiece of Justice. Seemed like a good fit.
In the studio, we are used to… Everyone has their favorite way to record. Ours is usually to track whatever we can’t do at home (drums and most gats) in the studio for a few days. Then I’ll go home and do the vocals and all the other overdubs separately.
Studio time is expensive! The best part is watching everyone do their thing; you don’t really have much luck when you’re rehearsing or playing live because you’re so focused on what you need to play, so being able to sit and watch is cool.
If we could tour with someone… All of our local band friends including but not limited to: Verum, Annoying Neighbours, It’s Acrylic and Space Flamingo. In our dreams, we do stadium tours with Royal Blood every night, so it’s fun.
Social media is… Love-hate! It’s always important to find the balance between putting together/creating interesting content to maintain engagement, and actually doing what you started the project for, which is writing the music.
My favorite app right now is… Remarks. Random lyrical essays, ideas galore, and all my other deepest, darkest secrets. The Domino app is a close runner-up.
Our most embarrassing moment to date was the moment… We’ve written a few songs lately in heavier tunings, drop C etc. to abort the mission and restart. These days we write chords on the set list, which seems to help (so far).
Life on the road can be… It remains to be seen! We can’t wait to get the riffs up and down the East Coast as soon as possible.
If you have us on your invoice, all we ask is that our endorsement contains… Grilled Chicken Cali Burritos from GYG. All tropical lager beers.
The scariest scenario I found myself in was… Dropping a pick on stage in the middle of a song.
Which celebrity/famous person would you like to be a spokesperson for the group… Ryan Gosling but as Ken from the movie ‘Barbie’.
If you had to live in a city abroad, where would you choose and why? Hossegor, France. It’s like Noosa but less crowded; Sadly, there’s no band scene there, so it might have to remain a retirement option.
Three people you would like to invite to dinner… Elvis, David Bowie, Dua Lipa. Three superstars from three different eras; let’s drink red wine and I want to hear all the stories.
If we came to your house, what would you cook for us? Yotam Ottolenghi’s roast chicken and three-rice salad; roommate introduced me to it and it’s crap!
When it comes to pets, do you love or hate our furry friends? Lovers for sure, we all grew up with furry friends. I have [synth] and I live together and are seriously considering getting our cat Gucci’s face tattooed on a human body wearing a suit.
No matter the expense, send me a case of… Stone and Wood Pacific Ale. I can never bring myself to pick up a whole case for their price, so if you can flip through one that would be great.
The last time I saw the inside of a gymnasium was… I checked the archives but this information is not available! These days exercise is done strictly in ocean surfing, or in lycra on the bike (yes, I’m one of those people).
What chore do you hate the most? Take out the trash for sure. An ethical dilemma as old as time itself; when you go to put something in the bin and it’s too full, do you try to crush your trash and leave it for the next person, or do you do the right thing and take it out! ?
Do you have any phobias… Radioactive trash juice runs down your leg as you try to do the right thing and pull it out!
Would you ever be on a reality TV show? No, unless it’s a bunch of rock bands in a pressure cooker situation to write and perform the best song with limited time. We would bypass that.
If you could prank one of your friends, who is your target and how do you take them down? Jai and I have decided that our other roommate has been spending way too much time playing PS4 lately; we’re considering taking matters into our own hands with a sneaky HDMI cable that hides the action/controller.
The best local takeout restaurant for a midnight meal that will leave you in a food coma? Guzman is still a favorite, aside from the fact that PJ’s Steaks in the Valley is the gold standard.
Which fictional character best describes your personality? Adam Driver as Kylo Ren – renenergy, dark and mysterious.
The last show you binge-watched? The latest was the new season of “Stranger Things.” So intense! Before that it was ‘The Witcher’ S2; Geralt’s gritty timbre, swordsmanship, and yellow irises kept me glued to the screen.
