The melodic hard-rock sounds of Mad Symphony traveled to Australia for the band’s recording contract.
Melbourne-based MR Records signed the sextet, three members of which are Surrey area musicians Kevin Wright (vocals), Ted Tosoff (rhythm guitar) and Amrit Prasad (bass), as well as Maple Ridge players Dave Groves (lead guitar) and Mike Russell (keyboards) and Wes Hallam from Vancouver (drums).
“Mad Symphony writes songs with a message of hope and resilience reminiscent of the glory days of rock and roll,” the record company said in an announcement in February, which noted the group’s goal of creating “a memorable and powerful music that resonates with the listener in both style and substance.
Mad Symphony was formed a few years ago as a project involving six musicians who have traveled extensively.
In 2018, Groves and Hallam joined up with multi-instrumentalist / producer / engineer Ted Tosoff, of Blue Voodoo fame, to begin writing for a new band whose name has yet to be named. Wright was recruited for vocals, followed by Russell and Prasad. Rehearsals and concerts kept Mad Symphony busy before COVID pretty much kills live music in the spring of 2020.
Time spent on local stages allowed the group to focus on songwriting and recording a debut EP, which pre-orders are now available for shipping on May 13, via melodicrockrecords.com. Song titles include “Do It All Over Again”, “The Next Door”, “Sell Me Out”, “Nothin ‘” and “Bittersweet Bye Bye”, with “Truth in the Shadows” named the lead single.
In February, “Sell Me Out” was announced as a semi-finalist of the International Songwriting Competition (ISC).
The eponymous debut album “represents the hard rock soundtrack of the lives of the six members of the band,” according to Groves. “Spanning many influences from the glory days of rock to the present day, the sounds of metal, progressive rock, classical and symphonic music are perfectly combined with commentary on modern society and culture. Timeless songs for a post-pandemic world.
The Mad Symphony logo is featured on a range of “merch” (merchandise) on the redbubble.com website, including t-shirts, hoodies, stickers, phone cases, coffee mugs, face masks and more.
On the lighter side, the group’s “Reality Check (Self-Isolation Video)” on YouTube begins with an introduction by the “Brady Bunch” style group, followed by the members performing the song in different rooms / spaces.
