Maple Ridge High School’s Rock Band program will help launch GLOW Maple Ridge on Friday, November 26th.
Three groups will take the stage at 6:30 pm at the Bandstand at Memorial Peace Park in downtown Maple Ridge – The Brownies; and green evenings; with the group D! vision by Zero headlining.
Division by Zero will perform four songs including a Jimmy Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith and Nirvana.
The Maple Ridge rock band high school course started in the fall of 2018 and has grown steadily since, group manager Brian Weingartner explained.
The course is part of the British Columbia Music Program in Contemporary Music. Students in the MRSS class are allowed to form their own groups and learn to play songs of their choice. They are also able to create arrangements and give live performances.
“Students also learn basic live sound and studio recording techniques in the classroom, which helps them acquire all the basic skills needed to create a successful independent band during their studies or beyond,” Weingartner said.
The MRSS Rock Band class has performed several times at the sold-out Kingfishers Pub & Grill. They also performed for Maple Ridge GLOW in 2019 and were accepted for the Association for Popular Music Education’s 2020 conference, which they reportedly had the opportunity to travel to in Detroit, MI. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they were unable to do so.
The class has since mobilized to give two live concerts and participated in recording sessions that will feature on an official vinyl record of the MRSS Rock Band which is still in production.
“This year’s group continues to be a very engaged and dynamic group, and you won’t be disappointed to come watch them play this Friday night,” said Weingartner.
