Warm weather causes wildlife to reappear. Nature comes back to life with the song of birds, butterflies and long-distance runners.

Nothing helps a successful multi-hour excursion on a run or hike like a solid playlist, does it?

Music can provide a good rhythm for running. Fast-paced rock songs can get your adrenaline pumping like you’re being chased by a dog or a mountain lion. More importantly, a long playlist will make racing more enjoyable because who wants to listen to the same twenty songs race after race.

Here are ten songs that will guide you through the short season when the sun is shining and the paths are calling.

Through Fire and Flames – Dragonforce

Who has time to catch all the lyrics when a personal best is on the horizon? Dragonforce has the melody to push you to run like the frenetic person you are.

“Through the Fire and Flames” is seven minutes of fast-paced guitar solos and lyrics that can slip away from you in a flash.

What better racing lyrics than “Fight hard, fight for steel / Through the wasteland forever”?

May be. There’s this adrenaline pump: “Lost inside you’ll never find / Lost in my mind / Day after day this misery must go on.”

Thunder – Imagine Dragons

Do you dream of bigger things? Do you want to leave your old life behind?

Let loose, relax and be lightning. Hit the air and set the deep bass on this modern ode to being your best self.

Barracuda – Heart

This hard rock song has become the band’s signature song. While the sun is smiling at you, go burn, burn, burn those calories.

There is a famous origin story behind this song. It was written in anger at her record company for allegedly spreading outrageous false rumors about singer and writer Ann Wilson.

Let motivational anger flow through you as you pound the pavement on your weekend run.

Immortals – Fall Out Boy

Are you hitting the pavement for better health? As Fall Out Boy says, “They say we are what we are /
But we don’t have to be.

As you propel yourself up those endless hills, you are immortal. Not for a long time. No inclination can beat a person who, for a brief moment, is unbeatable.

Throw My Heart – Mötley Crüe

It’s a song with a very Mötley Crüe sound and Mötley Crüe lyrics. Give your heart a fiery take-off with a blistering pace.

Feel the adrenaline running through your veins. Stay out there and hope it never ends.

Twisted Sister – We’re Not Gonna Take It

“It’s our life, it’s our song.”

“We are right / We are free / We will fight / You will see”

And we won’t take any more.

Hold On For A Hero – Bonnie Tyler

You are your own hero. You are fast. You are strong. And you are larger than life.

The quintessential ’80s song for hard-hitting exercise edits (apologies to “Eye of the Tiger”).

Made famous as part of the Footloose soundtrack, this song is sure to get marathon runners pumped.

Highway to Hell – AC/DC

Take it all in stride. It’s party time.

No one will slow you down. ‘Nuff said.

Oh yeah – The subways

The infectious, uplifting rock of The Subways will have you hitting “the ground with all the might, it makes no sense or sound”.

You have the whole world and you are on your way. And you will get there one way or another.

Over the Hills and Away – Gary Moore

If you’re unfamiliar with this Irish rock song, consider yourself lucky. You have the privilege of hearing this beautiful work for the first time. If you know this song from Nightwish, the Finnish symphonic metal band, you now know that there is an original.

Bonus Tracks: Nightwish has collected a number of covers and originals that can satisfy a craving for some fresh work to get you on the race track.

Go forth, valiant runners! Wearing running shoes, armed with a music playlist, and wearing a bottle of water, you will conquer your race!
